What Are Irradiated Herbs & Foods?

What is Irradiation?
Irradiation is a process by which herbal ingredients and foods are exposed to as much as 3 000 000 rads of radiation in order to kill bacteria and extend the shelf life of the product. These doses of radiation are millions of times greater than a chest X-ray (which is approximately 20 milliard). Irradiated foods do not become radioactive themselves but some of their cells are altered by the radiation. Long term studies are still being carried out.

Which Foods Are Irradaited?
Dried spices are allowed the highest radiation treatment. The FDA considers spices and herbs a minor part of our diets and theorizes that the effects on our bodies are diluted by the foods we eat. In addition to some dried spices being irradiated, fresh fruits, vegetables, pork, poultry, nuts and tea have all been approved for irradiation. The FDA estimates that 40% of the herbal supplements and foods that we eat may ultimately be irradiated.

How can we tell if the food has been Irradiated?
It is not a requirement by law, for foods to irradiated before they are sold. In most cases it is an option that manufactures use this option, to not only kill bacteria but to increase the shelf life and reduce waste therefore saving money for the manufacturer.

The FDA requires a radar symbol along with a written warning of irradiation treatment, to be placed on any whole foods that have been irradiated, such as chickens and vegetables. However, if those same items are used as ingredients no label is required. That means that any prepackaged or processed food could contain more than one irradiated ingredient and we would never know ! This same concern applies to herbal supplements. Some herbal supplements may contain irradiated ingredients and we would never know unless the manufacturer stipulates.
